In 1916 the levy broke at the confluence of the Gila River and the Great Colorado River. Water ran down what is now main street of old Yuma. Yuma's only church was Among the many homes that were lost during the devastation that the flood caused Yuma's only cemetery was also flooded of the 817 original Yumans buried at the cemetery it is estimated that over 500 of them were washed from their final resting place to float down main street.
